Richard Cocke (1597–1665) was a prominent colonial Virginia planter and politician. He established a political and social dynasty that firmly seated itself as among the most prominent in Virginia. Among his more prominent descendants are George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, as well as professional baseball player Ryne Harper.
In 1624, Abraham Piersey, Cape Merchant of the Virginia Company, purchased Flowerdew Hundred renaming it Piersey's Hundred. Piersey's Stone House was the first home with a permanent foundation in the colony. The 1624 Muster lists approximately sixty occupants at the settlement, including some of the first Africans in Virginia.

Germanna was a German settlement in the Colony of Virginia, settled in two waves, first in 1714 and then in 1717. Virginia Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood encouraged the immigration by advertising in Germany for miners to move to Virginia and establish a mining industry in the colony.
