A Native American settlement near here meant "upland forest" in the Osage language. [2] The History of Callaway County by John G. Provines [3] indicates that a patent for a survey of the area was granted in 1800 by the Spanish military government of Louisiana, before transfer to France lasting two years, and indicating that the area had rich soil and abundant fish and game.

Auxvasse Township today (as of 2018) covers an area of 90.89 square miles (235.4 km 2) and, although containing no incorporated settlements, does contain the unincorporated settlements of Portland, Readsville, and Reform, as well as eastern Steedman along its border with St Aubert Township. The historic town of Heilburn bordered Portland.
Jackson Township was created December 25, 1875 [4] from the former northeastern sector of Liberty Township and the northwestern sector of Nine Mile Prairie Township—as one can see by comparing the 1867 and 1897 maps of Callaway County townships. This took the city of Auxvasse, out of Liberty Township and put it in the new Jackson Township.
The township was reduced in size by about one-third between 1883 and 1897 by the creation of Cleveland Township from what had up to that time been its northern sector. These changes are shown in historical maps listed in the bibliography of the article on Callaway County, Missouri, and are significant for historical and genealogical research.

[1] The community was located approximately two miles south of Kingdom City and just west of U.S. Route 54. The site was on the Chicago and Alton Railroad and on the north bank of Richland Creek.
