Mars is no place for the faint-hearted. It’s dry, rocky, and bitter cold. The fourth planet from the Sun, Mars, is one of Earth's two closest planetary neighbors (Venus is the other). Mars is one of the easiest planets to spot in the night sky — it looks like a bright red point of light.
The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover searches for signs of ancient microbial life, to advance NASA's quest to explore the past habitability of Mars. The rover is collecting core samples of Martian rock and soil (broken rock and soil), for potential pickup by a future mission that would bring them to Earth for detailed study.
MARS QUICK FACTS SIZE [equatorial diameter] FOR MORE INFO, VISIT: MARS.NASÅ.GOV The land area of Earth is similar to that of Mars. 1/10 642 sextillion kg DENSITY [average] Mars is about as dense as Earth.
News and Features. The 2001 Mars Odyssey mission was the first spacecraft to make a global map of the chemical elements and minerals that make up the Martian surface. The spacecraft also holds the record for the longest continually active mission in orbit around a planet other than Earth.
Raw images of Mars taken by the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity Mars helicopter in Jezero Crater.
Curiosity is a car-sized, six-wheeled robot destined for Gale Crater on Mars. Its mission: to see if Mars ever could have supported small life forms called microbes...and if humans could survive there someday!
About Deimos. This enhanced-color image of Deimos, the smaller of the two moons of Mars, was taken on Feb. 21, 2009. The image was taken by HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Like Phobos, Deimos is a small and lumpy, heavily cratered object.
The Mars 2020/Perseverance rover is designed to better understand the geology of Mars and seek signs of ancient life. The mission will collect and store a set of rock and soil samples that could be returned to Earth in the future. It will also test new technology to benefit future robotic and human exploration of Mars.
While every mission's timeline is different, most follow a typical set of phases — from launch to science operations.
