Ike Clanton was a member of the Cowboys, a group of outlaws who clashed with the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. He was involved in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, the Earp Vendetta Ride, and was killed by a lawman in 1887.
A Native American settlement near here meant "upland forest" in the Osage language. [2] The History of Callaway County by John G. Provines [3] indicates that a patent for a survey of the area was granted in 1800 by the Spanish military government of Louisiana, before transfer to France lasting two years, and indicating that the area had rich soil and abundant fish and game.
History. Historical references to Auxvasse Township are complicated by the fact that, at the time of its founding on February 12, 1821, the Township was about 4 times larger than it is now, and included all of Callaway County east of Auxvasse Creek. The township as well as the city of Auxvasse are both named after Auxvasse Creek.
The township shows as extant on the 1876 official map of Callaway County, and its largest town (formerly called Smith's Landing, and now called Mokane) took on the name Saint Aubert around 1849, which may or may not be relevant to the formation of the township from what was the southern sector of Fulton Township (now East Fulton Township ...
The township was reduced in size by about one-third between 1883 and 1897 by the creation of Cleveland Township from what had up to that time been its northern sector. These changes are shown in historical maps listed in the bibliography of the article on Callaway County, Missouri, and are significant for historical and genealogical research.
