William H. Rand. William Henry Rand (May 2, 1828 – June 20, 1915) was an American printer and co-founder of the Rand McNally publishing company. He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, and as a young man was an apprentice at his brothers' print shop in Boston. He was enticed west in September 1849, by the California Gold Rush.

Gousha was founded in 1926 by former Rand McNally employees. General Drafting was founded in 1909. These three companies produced most of the approximately eight billion free maps handed out at American filling stations over a period of about 1920 to 1980. The practice of offering free maps diminished considerably in the 1970s. [6]
