Geographia was founded in 1911 by Alexander Gross (1879 – March 23, 1958), a native of Austria-Hungary who had established Geographia, Ltd, a commercial map publisher located at No. 55 Fleet Street in London. Gousha was founded in 1926 by former Rand McNally employees. General Drafting was founded in 1909. These three companies produced most of the approximately eight billion free maps handed out at American filling stations over a period of about 1920 to 1980. The practice of offering free maps diminished considerably in the 1970s. [6]
