Commissioned. March 1811. 14th Street is a major crosstown street in the New York City borough of Manhattan, traveling between Eleventh Avenue on Manhattan's West Side and Avenue C on Manhattan's East Side. It forms a boundary between several neighborhoods and is sometimes considered the border between Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan.
Midtown's skyline seen in January 2020, constituting one of the world's largest central business districts. Geographically, the northern boundary of Midtown Manhattan is commonly defined to be 59th Street; its southern boundary is less clear, and variously taken to be 34th Street, 23rd Street, or even 14th Street.
Upper Manhattan is the area above 96th Street. Midtown Manhattan is the area between 34th Street and 59th Street. Lower Manhattan is the area below 14th Street. West Side is the area west of Fifth Avenue; East Side is the area east of Fifth Avenue. Neighborhood names and boundaries are not officially defined.
An early Macy's building, dating from 1894, at 56 West 14th Street, designated a NYC landmark in 2012. Macy's was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy, who between 1843 and 1855 opened four retail dry goods stores, including the original Macy's store in downtown Haverhill, Massachusetts, established in 1851 to serve the mill industry employees of the area.
