Buffalo's first bishop, John Timon, established St. Joseph's in 1847 to be the seat of the new diocese. Because of the economic situation in the city he raised funds to build the church while he was in Europe. The cornerstone was laid on February 6, 1851. [1]

At this junction, the residential street turns over to commercial as NY 240 crosses over Buffalo Creek just west of the mouth of Cayuga Creek. After crossing over Buffalo Creek, NY 240 enters the town of Cheektowaga. In Cheektowaga, NY 240 immediately intersects with NY 354 (Clinton Street) before bending northeast around exit 53 of the Thruway.
