Poás has an area of 73.84 km² [4] and a mean elevation of 1,184 metres. [2] The elongated canton sits among the ridges and valleys on the southern slope of Poás Volcano. The Poás and Poasito rivers form its eastern border, while the Prendes and Tacares rivers limit the canton to the west. Poás Volcano is the canton's northernmost point.
Physical aspects. Lake Botos is located within Botos cone crater and has an almost circular outline. It is around 7,540 years old, drains through Angel River, and surrounding forest is classified as tropical, subtropical and some páramo vegetation. There are around 23 algae species. [1]
