Belvedere Apartments is a well-preserved apartment building located at 206 Hitt Street in downtown Columbia, Missouri. Built in 1927, the building was designed by noted architect Nelle Peters . [1] The building was added to Columbia's Notable Buildings List in 2008 [2] and is a possible candidate for the National Register of Historic Places . [3]
The Park Plaza's original owner, Sam Koplar, lost the Park Plaza to foreclosure during the Great Depression, but regained ownership in 1944; he became the Chase's majority owner in 1946. During the 1920s and 30s the region around Kansas City, Missouri was a "wide open town" under crime boss "Big City" Tom Pendergast. The Elms prospered as a speakeasy, and Al Capone was a frequent visitor. In 1922 the original owner, the Elms Realty Company, sold the hotel to Dr. A. S. McCleary, operator of a Kansas City sanitarium.
