Bandon (/ ˈbændən /) is a city in Coos County, Oregon, United States, on the south side of the mouth of the Coquille River. It was named by George Bennet, an Irish peer, who settled nearby in 1873 and named the town after Bandon in Ireland, his hometown. The population was 3,066 at the 2010 census [5] and by the 2020 census it was 3,321.
The National Register recognizes places of national, state, or local historic significance across the United States. [1] Out of over 90,000 National Register sites nationwide, [2] Oregon is home to over 2,000, [3] and 54 of those are found in Coos County. The run of US 101 in Oregon (from south to north) starts at the border with California, south of the twin cities of Brookings and Harbor (and north of Crescent City, California). The highway is mostly a two-lane road, running along the Southern Oregon coastline. Access to this section (other than 101) is via U.S. Route 199 or Oregon Route 42.
Bandon Dunes was also the site of the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball. Old Macdonald's was the primary course used for the event, with Pacific Dunes also used. History. Originally named Bandon Light, Coquille River Light was commissioned in 1895. First lit on February 29, 1896, the light guided mariners past the dangerous shifting sandbars into the Coquille River and harbor at Bandon. The light contained a fourth-order Fresnel lens and connected to the nearby keepers house by a wooden walkway.
