Callaway County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri.As of the 2020 United States Census, the county's population was 44,283. [1] Its county seat is Fulton. [2] With a border formed by the Missouri River, the county was organized November 25, 1820, and named for Captain James Callaway, grandson of Daniel Boone. [3]

The settlement later took on the name Saint Aubert around the time a post office was built there in 1849. Official Callaway County maps of 1876 show St. Aubert, which was also the name of its township area. The town was still referred to as Saint Aubert when Livingston's "History of Northeast Missouri" went to press in 1883 or 1884.

Missouri was initially settled predominantly by Southerners traveling up the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Many brought slaves with them. Jackson Township was created December 25, 1875 [4] from the former northeastern sector of Liberty Township and the northwestern sector of Nine Mile Prairie Township—as one can see by comparing the 1867 and 1897 maps of Callaway County townships. This took the city of Auxvasse, out of Liberty Township and put it in the new Jackson Township.
